Digitalization Funding 2026: All Subsidies at a Glance

Digital Now, go-digital, state funding: Which funding programs are still available for SMEs and how to successfully submit applications.

Free Money From the Government—and Why Most Companies Leave It on the Table

There are funding programmes that cover up to 50% of your digitalisation costs. Federal government, regional authorities, development banks—the money is there, waiting. And yet, remarkably few SMEs take advantage of these opportunities. Not because they don't want to, but because the funding jungle is so impenetrable that most give up before they've even started the application.

That's a shame. Because whether it's new software, IT security, cloud migration, or employee training—for much of it, there are grants you don't have to pay back. Let me give you the overview that the funding agencies themselves rarely provide.

The Key Federal Programmes

Digital Now is the best-known programme and targets companies with 3 to 499 employees. Up to €50,000 in grants, maximum 50% of costs. Almost everything related to digitalisation is eligible: hardware, software, IT security, digital business models, and even employee training. The application runs online through the federal ministry portal, and you'll need a digitalisation plan—which sounds more complicated than it actually is.

go-digital is specifically designed for small businesses with up to 100 employees and maximum €20 million in revenue. You receive up to €16,500 (50% grant) across three modules: digitalised business processes, digital market development, and IT security. The clever bit: consulting runs through authorised advisors who handle the application for you.

The Development Bank Digitalisation Loan isn't a grant but a subsidised loan—from 1.03% p.a., up to €25 million, with terms up to 20 years. Particularly interesting: no collateral required up to €500,000. Ideal for larger investments where a grant alone isn't sufficient.

Regional Funding—The Hidden Treasure

Many regions have their own programmes that can be combined with federal ones. Here's a selection:

Bavaria has the Digital Bonus with up to €50,000 (10% grant). Baden-Württemberg offers the Digitalisation Premium Plus with up to €10,000 in grants plus an optional loan up to €100,000. North Rhine-Westphalia has SME Innovative & Digital with up to €15,000 (50% grant). Hesse offers the Digi-Grant with up to €10,000.

In Saxony-Anhalt—our home market—there's the Digital Innovation programme, which is particularly interesting for small trade businesses and service providers. Programmes change regularly, so a current check is always worthwhile.

The Most Common Mistake: Starting Too Late

There's one mistake that reliably costs companies their funding: they start the project before the approval arrives. With almost all funding programmes, the rule is: not a single euro may be spent before the application is approved. Not even a contract may be signed. Anyone who orders in advance loses their entitlement.

This means: plan early. Identify what you want to digitalise. Get quotes (that's allowed). Submit the application. Wait for approval. And only then: go.

Other common mistakes: incomplete documentation (delays the process by weeks), unrealistic cost calculations (can lead to repayment demands), and poor record-keeping (problems with the proof of use).

How to Approach It Properly

My advice: get professional guidance. That sounds self-serving, but I mean it. The funding landscape is complex, programmes change, and a good advisor knows the pitfalls. Many advisory services are themselves eligible for funding—so you don't pay the full price.

And then: document everything. Every invoice, every time record, every change to the project. The proof of use at the end is the moment that shows whether you've worked cleanly. Anyone who gets sloppy here risks having to pay back the funding in the worst case.

The investment is worth it. 30-50% of your digitalisation costs can be covered by funding. For a €50,000 project, that's €15,000-25,000 that you're essentially getting for free. A bit of paperwork is worth that.
